6 sigma methodology for service innovation

1. 6 sigma performance methodology

There are 2 type of 6 sigma performance methodology, DMAIC and DFSS.
DAMIC is the methodology for improving the process or product defect currently exsting. It is composed of Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve and control step

On the other hand, DFSS stands for Design For Six Sigma. This methodology is for designing a new product or the non-existing process to make until 6 sigma level initially.

DFSS follows the roadmap of either DMADOV or DIDOV. DMADOV is composed of Define, Measure, Analyze, Design, Optimize and Verify to complete the project and DIDOV is composed of Define, Identify, Design, optimize and Verify to complete the innovative project.

DFSS is used to utilize in the new product development of the manufacture but right now it is used for rebuilding the indirect process of manufacture, developing the service product and service process design.

2. DMAIC methodology
DMAIC is the most generally used methodology to perform the 6 sigma project. This method is composed of 5 steps and each step is divided into 3 steps. The various tool and statistical method is used to achieve the defined activities for each step. The main performance contents and detail progress is as follows for each step of DMAIC methods.
※ Recently, SDMAIC, 6 steps can be made up by composing one more ‘Select’ step which derive the problem and opportunity and define the project.
① Define step
The project selection background (problem) is explained and the goal and project range is decided in the Define step. After the progress schedule is built with project team in this step, the project execution planner is filled out and negotiated with champion. Define step is composed of project selection, project define and project approval etc.

② Measure step
The critical product property (CTQ) of the major cause for the project is found in the measurement step. The index (CTQ-Y) measuring the project results are defined after searching the critical product properties (CTQ) and the current level is measured. After that the target level is reviewed in the measure step.

The customer classification, VOC collection and analysis and quality function deployment (QFD) is used to define the project result standards in this step. The main factor CTQ of the project result is found, measurement standard of the project result, CTQ-Y is defined, the current level is measured and the target level is reviewed in this measurement step. The measurement step is composed of confirming project Y, verifying the measurement system ability and selecting the CTQ-Y.

③ Analyze step
The cause variances (X’s) from the major property of the product (CTQ) are found out in this step then the critical factor (Vital Few X’s) is selected reflecting to the index of the major result (CTQ-Y) using the scientific analysis process or statistical method from the cause variances(X’s)

Analyze step is composed of data collection, data analysis and derivation of the vital few X’s
④ improve step
The Vital Few X’S of optimized solution is derived to achieve the goal that the critical results index (CTQ-Y) wants in this improve step.
The improve step is composed of establishing improving solution, optimization and verifying the improvement results.

⑤ Control step
The control planning is established and executed to maintain the improved result continuously in the control step. If the improved solution is decided to be applied effectively by monitoring the control list, the project is completed and transferred to the real work in this step.

3. DFSS methodology

DFSS methodology is 6 sigma methodology for using in the development of the new product and designing the new process. If DMAIC methodology is the one for improving the current product and process problem then DFSS methodology helps to have 6 sigma level initially for a new product and process.

DFSS methodology includes the DAMDOV and DIDOV methodology. DMADOV is composed of Defien, Measure, Analyze, Design, Optimize and Verify to complete the innovative project and DIDOV is composed of Define, Identify, Design, Optimize and Verify to complete the innovative project.

The defined and analyzed step of the DFSS methodology is the same as those of in the DMAIC.
The major performance and detail progress of the different step from the DMAIC is as follows.

① Design & Optimize step
The design output required from the project is actually designed and the design score card defined in the measurement step is verified and collected in the design step.
The optimized design is selected in the given environment for the optimize step and this step is preparing step for building the actual system after reviewing and approving the selected design.

② verify step
The confirmed design through the optimization step is tested using pilot test whether the problem occurs or not even though it is applied to real spot in the verify step. And the design can be made up for the problem that might be happened.
The results of the design is standardized, documentation and transferred to actual work after establishing the management plan to maintain the results hereafter constantly.
